Teacher Well-Being: Tools for Staying Sane

Teacher well-being is pivotal to a vibrant and productive learning environment. Teacher well-being refers to taking some time out from our busy teacher schedules to spend on doing things you enjoy or engaging in activities that support relaxation and being present in the moment. Teacher well-being ensures teachers are able to effectively do their job of teaching and educating young minds. If teachers are burnt out, tired and stressed the chances of teaching effectively is almost near impossible.

I have often noticed when I am feeling flat the students in my class also pick up on those vibes and feel flat themselves. So teacher well-being is not simply important for teachers but is also important as our moods have an impact on the students in our classroom – either positively or negatively.

There are many ways us as teachers can take care of ourselves so that we do not become overwhelmed or burnt out or so stressed we cannot offer an effective learning environment.

Some ideas for maintaining a healthy and positive approach to teaching and our wellbeing as busy teachers are listed below.

  • Adult Colouring Books: These have been around for a long time now, however, they can decrease stress and increase a sense of relaxation. I often use colouring in as a means to unwind and clear my head. It is almost impossible to think of anything else when you are focusing on beautiful colours and intricate designs in an adult colouring book. I have found using these books has worked wonders for me.

  • Meditation: Find a quiet space, play some soothing music and take some time to be still. Being still/quiet and being conscious of your breathing can support a sense of rejuvenation and energy. It does not have to be long, even 10 or 15 minutes a day can help.

  • Go for a Walk: Walking is the best form of exercise to refresh the mind and body. Take 20 minutes each day to go for a walk outside, listening to the sounds around you and breathing in the fresh air. Being in a different space with new surroundings can help o shift a stressed or tired mind.

  • Eating Healthily: We always teach our students the importance of healthy eating and the benefits it has for our bodies. Sometimes we may be guilty of not leading by example. Being aware of what we are eating and consciously making good eating choices can have a positive impact on our energy levels and ability to facilitate a busy day of learning. And of course drinking water is essential to a healthy body and keeping us well.

  • Prayer: If you are a spiritual person engaging in meaningful prayer may assist in supporting well-being. Prayer can be manifested in many ways – silent prayer, song, sketching/drawing, journaling, scrapbooking or painting. Prayer can be a powerful tool to connect with your spirituality and invigorate the soul.
