Behaviour Management Tools: A Teaching Must
Behaviour Management is a crucial part of an effective learning environment. Behaviour Management ensures students behaviour is monitored, positive behaviours are reinforced and evident in the classroom and undesirable behaviour can be dealt with quickly without causing disruption to learning.
I have tried many different strategies in my teaching and have found some strategies to be very effective. It is important to remember that what works for one cohort of students may not work for another. Also, trying to implement behaviour management strategies that take into account student interests has proved very effective and an excellent way to encourage positive behaviours for learning.
Listed below are some suggestions of behaviour management strategies and links to applicable websites where you can download resources.
Star Rewards: The idea of these star rewards is to have a different prize written on the back and students can choose which star they would like. I like to use these by having a raffle jar and when a student gets their named picked out from the jar they get to choose a reward. For longevity, print in colour and laminate. You can download these from Teach This. http://www.teachthis.com.au/products/view-resource/link/Reward-Stars-Colour/id/622
Dojo Points: Dojo Points are a website where teachers can create their class with students names. When students are demonstrating positive behaviours they are awarded Dojo Points. To make it more enticing for the students they receive a special certificate when they reach 25, 50 and 100 Dojo Points. When my class reached 1000 class Dojo points they received a movie afternoon with popcorn. You can really use the points however you like. A good idea is negotiate with students what they might like as the prizes at certain points. Dojo is also a great way to connect with parents and communicate with them through instant messenger. A must have for the classroom. The students love them!
Beanie Boos: Being on an infants class I quickly noticed how much my students loved Beanie Boos so I decided to find a way to incorporate them into my behaviour management. I bought four beanie boos attached them to lanyards. I choose students throughout the day to wear them if they are showing me safe, responsible and respectful behaviour. I then mark it on a chart and when students reach 5 times of wearing the Beanie Boos they get a star reward and 5 Dojo Points.
Table Points: My students are grouped into 5-6 students per group. They receive table points when they are displaying positive behaviours. Being on an infants class I made the table points a little more interesting by assigning a name to each level of points, for example, Super Star Workers = 100 table points. The students really like the idea and they very quickly know which title is worth how many points.
Raffle Jar: Students who show safe, respectful and responsible behaviours during the day receive a raffle ticket. Each Friday, two names are drawn out and the students receive a star reward.
Marble Chart: Students need to cover all the 100 marbles on the chart or have a 100 marbles placed into a jar. When students get all the marbles covered or in the jar they receive a whole class fun day including movie, games and free time. Students will work very hard for this one!
